Frequently asked questions about OEE

The OEE formula is: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. Each factor ranges from 0 to 100%, and the final result is the product of all three.

An OEE of 85% is considered world-class. Most factories operate between 50% and 60%, and values below 40% indicate significant room for improvement.

In practice, no. 100% would mean producing only good parts, at maximum speed, with zero stoppages — something unattainable in real-world operations. That's why 85% is already treated as the standard for excellence.

OEE measures equipment efficiency, combining availability, speed, and quality. Productivity measures output per resource used (per hour or per employee). OEE helps explain why productivity is high or low.

To increase OEE, you need to reduce unplanned stoppages, eliminate speed losses, and cut down on scrap — tackling what's known as the six big losses. The first step is measuring in real time to identify exactly where each percentage point is being lost.
